About the Exam

What Is the GACE?

The Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE)is the official state-approved educator certification assessment program required for anyone seeking to teach or work as an educational professional in Georgia's public schools (PreKโ€“12).

The program is overseen by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) and has served as Georgia's required certification assessment since September 1, 2006. Effective July 1, 2025, all GACE testing moved from ETS to Evaluation Systems, Pearson (ES). All new registrations are handled at gace.es.pearson.com.

All GACE assessments are aligned with state-approved educator preparation standards, national standards, and Georgia's Pโ€“12 curriculum frameworks. The specific exams required depend on your grade level, subject, and intended role. Passing a GACE assessment does not automatically grant certification โ€” candidates must also be recommended by their approved educator preparation program (EPP) and meet all other GaPSC requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything Georgia teacher candidates need to know about the GACE program.

What is the GACE and who administers it?+
The Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) is a series of standardized tests required to become a certified teacher in Georgia's public schools. The tests are developed and administered by Evaluation Systems, Pearson (ES) โ€” as of July 1, 2025, replacing the previous provider, ETS. The GACE program is overseen by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC). Tests are administered at Pearson VUE test centers statewide and via remote proctoring. Register and manage your testing at gace.es.pearson.com.
What changed when GACE moved from ETS to Pearson?+
Effective July 1, 2025, GACE content tests are now administered by Evaluation Systems, Pearson. Key changes include: a new website (gace.es.pearson.com), a new testlet-based assessment format, new Science of Reading literacy requirements (Assessments 350 + 418), new registration and scheduling through Pearson VUE, and a new GACE account system. Scores from ETS-administered tests taken before July 1, 2025 remain valid โ€” but ETS accounts terminate May 31, 2026, so download your score reports before then.
What is the new Science of Reading literacy requirement?+
Candidates who began an initial teacher preparation program on or after June 1, 2025 must pass two Science of Reading assessments: Assessment 350 (Fundamentals of the Science of Reading) and Assessment 418 (Application of the Science of Reading). Educators adding a Georgia teaching field on or after July 1, 2025 must complete the relevant literacy assessment. Out-of-state teachers applying for reciprocity must meet this requirement starting July 1, 2026.
What is the passing score for the GACE?+
GACE assessments use a scaled score range of 100โ€“300. There are two passing thresholds: 220 for Induction-level certification (a 2-year certificate while completing teaching experience) and 250 for Professional-level certification. Results are reported as Pass or Not Pass, with the level (Induction or Professional) noted.
How do I register for a GACE exam?+
To register for a GACE assessment: (1) Complete the registration and payment process at gace.es.pearson.com. (2) Ensure you have approval/eligibility from your educator preparation program (EPP). (3) Once registered, schedule your appointment 24/7 through Pearson VUE โ€” appointments are first-come, first-served. (4) You will receive a confirmation email with test center details. Make sure the name on your admission ticket matches your ID exactly.
How many times can I retake a GACE exam?+
You may retake GACE assessments an unlimited number of times, subject to a mandatory 30-day waiting period between attempts. You must complete the full registration process and pay the testing fee for each attempt. For the GACE Ethics end-of-module assessments, you receive 5 free attempts before additional fees apply.
Is the GACE required for all Georgia teacher certification?+
Yes. All applicants for initial State of Georgia Teacher Certification โ€” and certified teachers wishing to add fields โ€” must pass the relevant GACE content assessment in their chosen field. All candidates must also complete the GACE Educator Ethics Assessment (required for program admission). New candidates must now also complete the Science of Reading literacy assessments (350 + 418). Some exemptions exist for NBPTS-certified teachers in certain fields.
