About the GACE Special Education Academic Content Concentrations (Language Arts and Social Science) (P–8) (744)

Here’s what you need to know before you register.

The GACE Special Education Academic Content Concentrations (Language Arts and Social Science) (P–8) exam is a new assessment, effective July 1, 2026, for individuals seeking admission to an educator preparation program, initial certification in Georgia, or qualification to teach language arts and social studies content to special education students in grades pre-kindergarten through 8. It replaced the retired Special Education Academic Content Concentrations (Reading, Language Arts, and Social Science) (P–8) (732) assessment. If you already passed the 732, you don’t need to take the 744. It is administered through Evaluation Systems of Pearson on behalf of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC).

The exam is made up of two testlets, which you can take together in one session or separately. Both testlets have 30 questions, but their time limits differ: Testlet 412 (Language Arts Concentration) gives you 60 minutes, while Testlet 413 (Social Studies Concentration) gives you 45 minutes. Combined, both testlets total 60 questions in 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Both testlets cost the same — $42.50 individually or $84.50 combined — notably less than most GACE content exams, which typically run $169.00. Plan for extra time beyond the testing minutes themselves: add 15 minutes per testing session for a tutorial and to complete a nondisclosure agreement.

The exam is delivered entirely by computer in a selected-response (multiple-choice) format. No reference materials are provided — you won’t have access to a calculator, formula sheet, or any other aid during either testlet.

To pass, you need a cumulative score of 220 or higher, and you must also meet the floor — the minimum required score — for each individual testlet. To register, create a GaPSC MyPSC account at mypsc.gapsc.org, then create an Evaluation Systems GACE testing account at gace.es.pearson.com.

Who Needs the GACE 744?

Find out if this is the right exam for your teaching goals.

Georgia Requirement: You need the GACE Special Education Academic Content Concentrations (Language Arts and Social Science) (P–8) (744) if you are seeking a Georgia teaching certificate to provide language arts and social studies instruction to special education students in grades pre-kindergarten through 8. You must pass both testlets (412 and 413) to earn the full certification — meaning a cumulative score of 220 or higher, plus meeting the floor score on each individual testlet.

Already passed the 732? If you previously passed the retired Special Education Academic Content Concentrations (Reading, Language Arts, and Social Science) (P–8) (732) assessment, you do not need to take the 744. Your existing 732 pass remains valid for your certification record. Verify your specific status in your Evaluation Systems GACE testing account or with your educator preparation program if you’re unsure.

How to register: Start by creating a GaPSC MyPSC account at mypsc.gapsc.org to get your Georgia certification number. After your eligibility is confirmed, create an Evaluation Systems GACE testing account at gace.es.pearson.com/test/744 and register for your testlets. Always verify current certification requirements at gapsc.com.

How to Prepare for the GACE 744

Here are some tips to help you get ready for each testlet.

  • Because this is a new assessment, be careful about which study materials you use. Many prep resources online still reference the retired 732 assessment, which had a different testlet structure. Confirm that any study guide or practice test you use specifically addresses the current 744 — testlets 412 and 413 — before relying on it.
  • Both testlets have 30 questions, but Testlet 412 gives you more time per question. Use that extra time in Testlet 412 deliberately — language arts questions on comprehension and writing conventions often require more careful reading than social studies factual recall questions.
  • Because you must meet the floor on both testlets, prepare for language arts and social studies with equal seriousness. It’s easy to over-focus on one content area if you feel stronger in it, but falling below the floor on either testlet means you don’t pass.
  • For Testlet 412, prioritize foundational reading skills and differentiated instruction strategies. Since this exam certifies you to teach special education students specifically, expect an emphasis on how to adapt and scaffold language arts instruction, not just general literacy content knowledge.
  • For Testlet 413, focus on how to make social studies content accessible, not just historical and civic facts. This exam is likely to test your ability to adapt primary sources, vocabulary, and abstract concepts for students with exceptionalities.
  • Use the Georgia Standards of Excellence for English Language Arts and Social Studies as your primary content references. Since the 744 is new, the Georgia P–8 grade-level standards for these two subjects are your most reliable guide to the depth of content knowledge expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about the GACE 744 exam? Here are answers to the most common ones.

Is the GACE 744 a new assessment?
Yes. The GACE Special Education Academic Content Concentrations (Language Arts and Social Science) (P-8) (744) replaced the retired Special Education Academic Content Concentrations (Reading, Language Arts, and Social Science) (P-8) (732) assessment on July 1, 2026. If you already passed the GACE 732, you do not need to take the 744.
How many questions are on the GACE 744?
There are 60 selected-response questions in total. Testlet 412 has 30 questions in 60 minutes. Testlet 413 has 30 questions in 45 minutes. Combined testing time is 1 hour and 45 minutes.
What is the passing score for the GACE 744?
You need a cumulative score of 220 or higher, and you must also meet the floor — the minimum required score — for each individual testlet. Meeting the cumulative total alone isn’t enough if you fall below the floor on either testlet.
How much does the GACE 744 cost?
The fee for both testlets in one appointment is $84.50. If you take testlets individually, each one costs $42.50.
Do I need to take the GACE 744 if I already passed the GACE 732?
No. If you previously passed the Special Education Academic Content Concentrations (Reading, Language Arts, and Social Science) (P-8) (732) assessment, you do not need to take the 744. The 744 is the replacement assessment for candidates who have not yet passed the retired 732.
How do I register for the GACE 744?
To register, you’ll need your MyPSC account. If you don’t have one, create an account at mypsc.gapsc.org to receive your Georgia certification number. Once your eligibility is confirmed, create an Evaluation Systems GACE testing account at gace.es.pearson.com/test/744 and register for the testlets you want to take.
