About the Exam

What Is the FTCE?

The Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) are a series of exams required for anyone seeking an educator certificate in Florida. They are administered by Pearson through its National Evaluation Series program on behalf of the Florida Department of Education.

The FTCE program has three parts most candidates must complete: the General Knowledge Test (GKT or four subtests) required for admission to a Florida educator preparation program, the Professional Education exam covering instructional practice, and a subject-area exam matched to the grade level and content you plan to teach — from Prekindergarten/Primary through grade 12.

Passing the required FTCE exams does not by itself grant certification — candidates must also complete an approved preparation program and meet all other Florida DOE requirements. Register at fl.nesinc.com.

How to Register for an FTCE Exam

Follow these four steps to register through the official Pearson FTCE/FELE portal.

Register at fl.nesinc.com. Your name must match your government-issued ID exactly. Select your test(s) and complete payment; military fee waivers are available.

Choose a Pearson-approved test center in Florida. Appointments are available year-round. Arrive with valid, government-issued photo ID.

Receive Your Scores
Score reports typically post within 4 weeks in your testing account. Passing results are sent automatically to the Bureau of Educator Certification. Scores remain accessible for 5 years.

How many times can I retake the FTCE?+
There is no limit on the number of retake attempts, but you must wait 31 calendar days after a failed attempt (or after a score verification session) before retaking. For most exams you must retake the entire test; for the General Knowledge Test, Elementary Education K-6, and PK-3, you only need to retake the specific subtest(s) you did not pass. Score reports released since January 2018 remain accessible in your testing account for 5 years from the release date. Do I need to take the combined General Knowledge Test or the individual subtests?+
Either path satisfies the requirement. The combined GKT (200 questions, 240 minutes) covers Reading, English Language Skills, Mathematics, and the Essay in one sitting. You can instead take the four individual subtests (827, 826, 828, 825) separately and retake only the ones you don't pass — often the better option if you're confident in some areas but want more preparation time for others.
