About the Exam

What Is the Praxisยฎ?

The Praxisยฎ assessments are a series of teacher certification and licensure exams developed and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). They are used by more than 40 U.S. states, U.S. territories, and other agencies as part of the certification or licensure process for educators entering the profession.

Praxis tests fall into three main categories: Core Academic Skills for Educators โ€” three foundational tests (Reading 5713, Writing 5723, Mathematics 5733) required by many states for teacher prep program admission; Subject Assessments โ€” 90+ individual tests across all grade levels and subjects; and Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) โ€” four grade-band pedagogical assessments. The new Elementary Education Fundamentals series (8002โ€“8006) launched March 9, 2026, replacing the 5001/7001 series (retiring August 2028).

Passing a Praxis test does not automatically grant teacher certification โ€” candidates must complete an approved educator prep program and meet all other state requirements. Register at praxis.ets.org.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything teacher candidates need to know about the Praxis program.

What is the Praxis and who administers it?+
The Praxisยฎ assessments are teacher certification exams developed and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). Used by 40+ U.S. states as part of the teacher licensing process. Three main categories: Praxis Core (Reading 5713, Writing 5723, Mathematics 5733), Subject Assessments (90+ tests), and PLT (pedagogy, four grade bands). Register at praxis.ets.org.
How are Praxis passing scores determined?+
Passing scores are not set by ETS โ€” they are established individually by each state or licensing agency. The same exam can have different passing scores in different states. Always verify your specific state's passing score at praxis.ets.org/scores before registering.
What is the new Elementary Education Fundamentals series (8002โ€“8006)?+
The Elementary Education Fundamentals series (8002โ€“8006) launched March 9, 2026. It replaces the older 5001 and 7001 Multiple Subjects series, which retire in August 2028. The new tests include greater depth, 10โ€“15% teaching scenario questions, and support Praxis Steps modular testing (Summer 2026). Both series are currently active. Verify which your state requires at praxis.ets.org/state-requirements.
What is the Free After Three policy?+
ETS's Free After Three program waives the registration fee for candidates who retake a Praxis test for the third time or beyond. Must have paid for two prior attempts. The free retake must be taken within 6 months of the second attempt score. Contact ETS to request the waiver. Details at praxis.ets.org/free-after-three.
Is there a penalty for wrong answers on Praxis tests?+
No. Your score is based solely on correct answers โ€” no penalty for wrong answers on any Praxis test. Always answer every question. Never leave a question blank. Eliminate clearly wrong choices first, then select your best remaining answer.
How long are Praxis scores valid?+
Praxis scores are valid for 10 years from the test date. ETS reports all scores โ€” there is no score choice option. You can designate score recipients during registration or afterward through your Praxis account.
What is the difference between the Praxis Core and Praxis Subject Assessments?+
The Praxis Core (Reading 5713, Writing 5723, Mathematics 5733) tests foundational academic skills for all teacher candidates regardless of subject โ€” typically required for admission to teacher preparation programs. Praxis Subject Assessments (90+ tests) measure content knowledge in specific subject areas and grade levels โ€” typically required for the actual teaching license in your subject area. Many states require both. Verify your state's specific requirements at praxis.ets.org/state-requirements.
