What Is the Praxisยฎ?
The Praxisยฎ assessments are a series of teacher certification and licensure exams developed and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). They are used by more than 40 U.S. states, U.S. territories, and other agencies as part of the certification or licensure process for educators entering the profession.
Praxis tests fall into three main categories: Core Academic Skills for Educators โ three foundational tests (Reading 5713, Writing 5723, Mathematics 5733) required by many states for teacher prep program admission; Subject Assessments โ 90+ individual tests across all grade levels and subjects; and Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) โ four grade-band pedagogical assessments. The new Elementary Education Fundamentals series (8002โ8006) launched March 9, 2026, replacing the 5001/7001 series (retiring August 2028).
Passing a Praxis test does not automatically grant teacher certification โ candidates must complete an approved educator prep program and meet all other state requirements. Register at praxis.ets.org.

Praxis assessments use a 100โ200 scaled score range. Passing scores are set individually by each state โ not by ETS. Always verify your state's specific passing score at praxis.ets.org/scores.
Scores are on a 100โ200 scaled range. Passing scores are set individually by each state โ not ETS โ and vary across states and exam types. There is no penalty for wrong answers on any Praxis test. ETS's Free After Three program waives the fee after your third attempt on the same test. Score reports are valid for 10 years. Always verify your state's passing score at praxis.ets.org/scores.
