What the 702 tests, who takes it, and how the testlet structure works in practice.

The GACE Elementary Education P–5 (702) is administered by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) through Evaluation Systems of Pearson (ES), which took over from ETS as the GACE test provider effective July 1, 2025. It is required for anyone seeking a Georgia teaching certificate in Elementary Education for grades Pre-K through 5. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for elementary school teachers in Georgia is approximately $60,000, with kindergarten teachers earning slightly less.

The exam is organized into five testlets, each containing 30 selected-response questions. You can take all five in a single combined session (4 hours total) or register for individual testlets separately — a significant flexibility that allows you to target only the content areas you need to retake. Testlet 002 Mathematics has the longest individual time window (60 minutes vs. 45 minutes for each of the remaining four), reflecting the depth of mathematical reasoning required.

Georgia Requirement: The GACE Elementary Education P–5 (702) is required for anyone seeking a Georgia teaching certificate to teach in elementary classrooms at the Pre-K through Grade 5 level. Candidates must pass this exam as part of a GaPSC-approved educator preparation program or post-program certification pathway.

Registration pathway: If you are enrolled in a GaPSC-approved teacher preparation program, you need program provider approval before registering. How to Prepare for the GACE Elementary Education P–5 (702)

Strategies for a 150-question, 5-testlet assessment covering the full breadth of P–5 elementary content.

  • Use the testlet structure strategically — you don't have to sit all five at once. If you're stronger in some content areas than others, consider registering for your weakest testlets first (giving yourself extra study time) and knocking out your strongest testlets while your content knowledge is fresh. Individual testlets can be retaken separately without retaking the entire exam, so a poor score on one testlet doesn't require redoing all five.
  • ELA Testlet 001: Prioritize the writing process and the "big five" of early literacy — these are the most consistently tested concepts. Know each stage of the writing process (prewriting → drafting → revising → editing → publishing) and the key instructional strategies for each. For early literacy, be able to define and distinguish phonological awareness (broader — working with sound units like syllables, onset-rime) from phonemic awareness (specific — working with individual phonemes) from phonics (connecting phonemes to written letters). These three are frequently confused on the exam.
  • Mathematics Testlet 002 is the longest individual testlet (60 minutes) and covers the widest conceptual ground — plan for more study time here. Prioritize fractions and fraction operations (a top source of student misconceptions), place value across whole numbers and decimals, and data analysis (reading bar graphs, calculating mean/median/mode/range). Practice explaining WHY arithmetic procedures work rather than just executing them — the exam tests conceptual understanding, not just computation.

Focus on the elements and principles of art (the seven elements are frequently tested), locomotor vs. non-locomotor skills in PE, and basic music notation (time signatures, note values).

The total fee for the full exam (all 5 testlets) is $169, including a $25 registration fee and a $28 test center fee. International test sites add $50. There is a $25 fee to change your date, center, or time. Cancel three or more calendar days before the exam for a 50% fee refund. Register at gace.es.pearson.com via your MyPSC account.
What is the passing score for the GACE Elementary Education P–5 (702)?+
The passing score is 220 on a scaled score range of 100–300. There is no penalty for wrong answers — answer every question. Unofficial scores are displayed immediately after the exam; official scores are released approximately 3 weeks after the testing window closes.
What are the 5 testlets and what does each cover?+
Testlet 001 – English Language Arts (30q, 45 min): reading, writing, oral language, literary practices, writing process, research.
Testlet 002 – Mathematics (30q, 60 min): numerical reasoning, algebra, geometry, measurement and data.
Testlet 003 – Social Studies (30q, 45 min): U.S. and world history, Georgia history, geography, civics, economics.
Testlet 004 – Science (30q, 45 min): earth science, life science, physical science, scientific method.
Testlet 005 – Arts, Health and Wellness (30q, 45 min): visual arts, performing arts, physical education, health.
How long do I have to wait to retake the GACE 702?+
You must wait at least 30 days before retaking any testlet. Individual testlets can be retaken separately — you don't need to redo all five if only one needs to be improved. Testing windows are available every month except September and December. You must register at least two full business days before your chosen test date.
