About the Exam

What Is the TExESยฎ?

The Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) is a series of teacher certification exams developed by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and administered by Pearson. TExES exams measure whether a candidate possesses the content knowledge and pedagogical skills necessary for a Texas teaching certificate in a specific subject area and grade band.

TExES exams are computer-administered tests (CAT) that are criterion-referenced โ€” meaning your score reflects your performance against a fixed standard rather than a comparison to other test-takers. Every Texas educator must pass the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 (160) exam, which is required for all certification areas, plus a content-specific exam matching their certification field. Each exam is scored on a scale of 100 to 300, with a minimum passing score of 240.

For exams with multiple subtests, such as Core Subjects EC-6 (391) and Core Subjects 4-8 (211), each subtest must individually score at least 240 โ€” failing any single subtest results in an overall Not Passed status even if other subtests score above 240. Register and verify requirements at tx.nesinc.com and tea.texas.gov.

TExES Passing Score & Score Scale

All TExES exams use a scaled score range of 100 to 300, and the minimum passing score is 240 for every exam in the series. Verify requirements at tea.texas.gov.

TExES Score Scale โ€” 100 to 300
Did Not Pass100 โ€“ 239
Below Minimum Passing Score โ€” Subtest Must Be Retaken
Passing240 โ€“ 300
Meets or Exceeds the Minimum Passing Score

The 100โ€“300 scale was set by the Commissioner of Education with input from Texas educator committees. The minimum passing score of 240 applies uniformly across all TExES exams. Score reports include up to four sections: Total Test Performance (pass/fail status), Performance by Domain, Performance by Competency, and Holistic Scores (constructed-response exams only). Domain and competency breakdowns do NOT have individual passing standards โ€” only the total scaled score determines pass/fail. For multi-subtest exams (Core Subjects EC-6/4-8), each subtest needs its own 240+ score. There is no partial credit. Retake wait: 45 days minimum. Maximum attempts: 5 total (4 retakes after initial attempt).

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything Texas teacher candidates need to know about the TExES.

What is the TExES and who needs to take it?+
The Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) is a series of teacher certification exams developed by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and administered by Pearson. Every prospective Texas educator must pass the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 (160) exam plus a content-specific exam corresponding to their certification area. Register through ECOS for Educators at tea.texas.gov and at tx.nesinc.com.
What is the TExES passing score?+
All TExES exams use a scaled score range of 100 to 300, and the minimum passing score is 240 for every exam in the series. For exams with multiple subtests, such as Core Subjects EC-6 (391) and Core Subjects 4-8 (211), each subtest must individually score at least 240 โ€” failing any single subtest results in an overall Not Passed status even if other subtests scored above 240.
How much does the TExES cost?+
Most TExES exams cost $116, including the Core Subjects EC-6 (391) and Core Subjects 4-8 (211) exams. The Science of Teaching Reading (293) exam costs $136. This is a change that took effect beginning in January 2021 when STR became a required separate exam for EC-6 and 4-8 ELAR candidates. Fees are paid directly to Pearson during registration.
How many times can I retake the TExES?+
If you do not pass on your first attempt, you may retake the exam up to four more times, for a total of five attempts. You must wait a minimum of 45 days between attempts and must pay the full examination fee each time you retest. For multi-subtest exams, you only need to retake the subtest(s) you did not pass.
What exams are required for Texas teacher certification?+
Every Texas candidate needs: (1) the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 (160) โ€” required for all certification areas; (2) a content-specific exam matching the grade level and subject sought, such as Core Subjects EC-6 (391) for elementary generalists or Mathematics 7-12 (235) for secondary math. Candidates seeking Core Subjects EC-6 or Core Subjects 4-8/ELAR certification must also pass the Science of Teaching Reading (293) exam, required since January 2021.
What is the difference between Core Subjects EC-6 (391) and the new EC-6 (491)?+
A new Core EC-6 (491) exam has been introduced. Candidates seeking Core Subjects EC-6 certification have until August 31, 2027 to take the current 391 exam, with the last day to apply and recommend candidates using 391 scores being August 31, 2028. Scores from the current 391 exam and subtests cannot be combined with the new 491 exam and subtests โ€” they must be completed entirely under one system. This is not a new certification area; only the exam version and certificate name has changed. Verify your specific timeline at tea.texas.gov.
How is the TExES scored?+
TExES exams are criterion-referenced and use scaled scoring. Your raw score (number of questions answered correctly) is converted by Pearson into a scaled score from 100 to 300 to account for slight variations in difficulty between different test forms. You need a scaled score of 240 to pass. There is no partial credit โ€” each question is scored correct or incorrect. Score reports may include Total Test Performance, Performance by Domain, Performance by Competency, and (for constructed-response exams) Holistic Scores. Domain and competency breakdowns do not have individual passing standards.
Where do I register for TExES exams?+
First create a TEA Login (TEAL) account through ECOS for Educators at tea.texas.gov to obtain your TEA ID number. Then create your testing account at tx.nesinc.com (Pearson) and link it using your TEA ID. You must schedule your exam appointment within 170 days of registering. You can reschedule or cancel without fees up to 48 hours before your test.
