Here’s a quick overview of the exam. Testlet 254 is scored and scheduled differently from the other three testlets.
About the GACE Latin (P–12) (743)
Here’s what you need to know before you register.
The GACE Latin (P–12) exam is for individuals seeking admission to an educator preparation program, initial certification in Georgia, or qualification to teach Latin from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in Georgia public schools. It is administered through Evaluation Systems of Pearson on behalf of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC).
The exam is made up of four testlets. Three use selected-response (multiple-choice) questions: Testlet 251 (Interpretive Reading—Latin, 25 questions, 60 minutes), Testlet 252 (Latin Linguistic Structures and Language Acquisition, 20 questions, 30 minutes), and Testlet 253 (Roman History and Cultural Connections, 20 questions, 30 minutes). The fourth, Testlet 254 (Text Analysis and Presentational Speaking—Latin), requires you to complete 3 constructed-response assignments in 75 minutes, including a spoken Latin component. Combined, all four testlets total 65 selected-response questions plus 3 constructed-response tasks in 3 hours and 15 minutes.
Fees differ by testlet: Testlets 251, 252, and 253 each cost $40.00 individually. Testlet 254 costs $49.00 because it requires human scoring of your constructed responses. All four combined cost $169.00. Plan for extra time beyond the testing minutes themselves: add 15 minutes per testing session for a tutorial and to complete a nondisclosure agreement.
Testlet 254 also has a different scheduling and location structure than the other three testlets. Testlets 251, 252, and 253 are available year-round by appointment at computer-based test centers throughout Georgia and nationwide. Testlet 254 is only available during specific two-week testing windows at specific test centers in Georgia. If you’re registering for a combination of testlets that includes Testlet 254, your entire appointment needs to fall within one of Testlet 254’s available windows at a center that offers it. A microphone and headset are provided for the speaking assignment. The exam provides no reference materials for any testlet.
To pass, you need a cumulative score of 220 or higher, and you must also meet the floor — the minimum required score — for each individual testlet. To register, create a GaPSC MyPSC account at mypsc.gapsc.org, then create an Evaluation Systems GACE testing account at gace.es.pearson.com.

How to Prepare for the GACE Latin (P–12) (743)
Here are some tips to help you get ready for each testlet.
- Check Testlet 254’s testing windows before you build your study timeline. Since this testlet is only offered during specific two-week windows at specific Georgia centers, work backward from the nearest available window rather than assuming you can test whenever you’re ready. This is the single most important logistical step for this exam.
- For Testlet 251 (Interpretive Reading), build your reading speed with unfamiliar texts, not just texts you’ve already translated. At roughly 2.4 minutes per question, you need to be able to parse new Latin passages quickly using grammatical clues, not rely on prior memorization of specific passages.
- For Testlet 252 (Linguistic Structures), drill declensions and conjugations until they’re automatic. This testlet moves quickly — 20 questions in 30 minutes — so you can’t afford to pause and reconstruct a paradigm from scratch during the exam.
- For Testlet 253 (Roman History), study the connections between Roman civilization and the modern world specifically. This testlet doesn’t just test historical facts in isolation — it tests your ability to explain why Roman history still matters, which is a distinct skill from simple recall.
- For Testlet 254, practice speaking Latin aloud regularly, not just reading it silently. Most Latin instruction emphasizes reading comprehension, so the presentational speaking task may require a different kind of practice than you’re used to. Read passages aloud consistently in the weeks before your appointment to build comfort with pronunciation.
- Use the official GACE 743 Study Guide and the American Classical League’s standards for classical language education as your two primary references. The study guide is available through your Evaluation Systems GACE testing account, and the ACL provides the national framework most Latin programs use to structure instruction and assessment.
