About the GACE Special Education Academic Content Concentrations (Mathematics and Science) (P–8) (733)
Here’s what you need to know before you register.
The GACE Special Education Academic Content Concentrations (Mathematics and Science) (P–8) exam is for individuals seeking admission to an educator preparation program, initial certification in Georgia, or qualification to teach mathematics and science content to special education students in grades pre-kindergarten through 8. It is administered through Evaluation Systems of Pearson on behalf of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC).
The exam is made up of two testlets, which you can take together in one session or separately. Testlet 414 (Mathematics Concentration) is your larger testlet, with 40 questions and a 90-minute time limit. Testlet 415 (Science Concentration) has 30 questions and a 60-minute time limit. Combined, both testlets total 70 questions in 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Both testlets cost the same — $42.50 individually or $84.50 combined — notably less than most GACE content exams, which typically run $169.00. Plan for extra time beyond the testing minutes themselves: add 15 minutes per testing session for a tutorial and to complete a nondisclosure agreement.
This exam pairs with GACE Special Education Academic Content Concentrations (Language Arts and Social Science) (P–8) (744). The two exams don’t share any testlets. The exam is delivered entirely by computer in a selected-response (multiple-choice) format. No reference materials are provided for either testlet, including no calculator for the mathematics portion.

How to Prepare for the GACE 733
Here are some tips to help you get ready for each testlet.
- Testlet 414 (Mathematics) is your larger testlet at 40 questions — prioritize your study time accordingly. It also gives you the most total time of any testlet on this exam, so budget your preparation time to match: math content should get the largest share of your study hours.
- Practice identifying student misconceptions, not just solving the math yourself. This exam tests your ability to diagnose why a student is struggling — for example, distinguishing a student who makes a simple calculation error from one who fundamentally misunderstands why a procedure like fraction division works. Practice explaining math procedures in words and with visual models, not just executing them.
- Because no calculator is provided, build your mental math and estimation skills. You’ll need to work through numerical problems by hand under time pressure, so practice without relying on a calculator during your study sessions.
- For Testlet 415 (Science), study across all three domains — earth/space, life, and physical science — rather than favoring one. With only 30 questions covering three distinct science domains, you can’t afford major gaps in any one area.
- Because you must meet the floor on both testlets, prepare for math and science with equal seriousness. Even though Testlet 414 has more questions, falling below the floor on the smaller Testlet 415 still means you don’t pass.
- Use the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Mathematics and Science as your primary content references. These P–8 grade-level standards tell you the depth of content knowledge expected, and understanding grade-level expectations will help you contextualize the instructional adaptation questions on this exam.
