About the Certification

What Is NBPTS National Board Certification?

National Board Certification is the highest credential a PreK-12 teacher can earn in the United States โ€” described by NBPTS as "the most respected professional certification available in education." It is awarded by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), an independent nonprofit organization founded in 1987 by a task force of the Carnegie Forum on Education and the Economy. Component 1 is administered through Pearson VUE at testing centers nationwide.

Certification is available in 25 certificate areas spanning 16 disciplines and six student developmental levels. The certification is grounded in the Five Core Propositionsโ€” NBPTS's foundational statement of what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. The assessment collects standards-based evidence across four components: one computer-based content knowledge assessment and three classroom-embedded portfolio entries.

National Board Certification is voluntary and complements (not replaces) a state teaching license. It is valid for 10 years and recognized in all 50 states. Many states, districts, and organizations provide financial benefits โ€” salary increases, stipends, and subsidies โ€” for NBCTs. More than 130,000 teachers across the U.S. have earned National Board Certification since the program's inception. Apply at nbpts.org.

The Five Core Propositions

National Board Certification is grounded in five foundational propositions that define what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. All 25 certificate-area standards and all four certification components are built on these propositions.

Proposition 1
Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
Accomplished teachers believe all students can learn and act on this belief. They treat students equitably and understand how students develop and learn. They adjust their teaching to the needs of individual students and are committed to students' growth as individuals โ€” not just as learners of a subject.
Proposition 2
Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
Accomplished teachers have a rich understanding of their subject matter and the history, structure, and real-world applications of their discipline. They use multiple instructional strategies and understand how to present subject matter in multiple ways that students find compelling and accessible.
Proposition 3
Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
Accomplished teachers create, enrich, and alter instructional groups to meet students' needs. They keep track of student progress and use multiple evaluation methods to ensure students are learning. They communicate effectively with parents and students about each student's progress and achievement.
Proposition 4
Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
Accomplished teachers are models of educated persons and are continually making difficult choices that test their judgment. They are inventive in their teaching, seek the advice of others, and draw on educational research and scholarship. They are constantly improving their practice.
Proposition 5
Teachers are members of learning communities.
Accomplished teachers contribute to school effectiveness by collaborating with other professionals, working effectively with parents, engaging the larger community, and taking advantage of resources beyond the classroom walls. They work collaboratively to improve student learning and school culture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything teacher candidates need to know about NBPTS National Board Certification.

What is NBPTS National Board Certification and who should pursue it?+
National Board Certification is the highest teaching credential available in the United States, awarded by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). It is voluntary, standards-based, performance-based, and valid for 10 years. It is available in 25 certificate areas across 16 disciplines and is recognized in all 50 states. Teachers who want to demonstrate accomplished practice, advance professionally, and often earn salary increases or stipends should pursue it. Apply at nbpts.org.
How much does National Board Certification cost?+
Each of the four components costs $475, for a total of $1,900. There is also a $75 non-refundable annual registration fee for each year you submit components. A payment plan is available: six equal monthly installments (approximately $80/component/month) with no interest, fees, or credit check. Many states, districts, and organizations provide financial support โ€” see nbpts.org/support/funding for current resources.
What are the four NBPTS components?+
Component 1: Content Knowledge โ€” computer-based assessment at a Pearson VUE testing center; 45 selected-response items + 3 constructed-response exercises; $475.

Component 2: Differentiation in Instruction โ€” portfolio entry; student work samples + written commentary on differentiated instruction; $475.

Component 3: Teaching Practice and Learning Environment โ€” portfolio entry; video recordings of classroom teaching + written commentary; $475.

Component 4: Effective and Reflective Practitioner โ€” portfolio entry; evidence of student knowledge, assessment practices, and professional collaboration; $475.
Who is eligible for National Board Certification?+
To be eligible, you must: (1) hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; (2) hold a valid state teaching license for each of the three years of verified employment; (3) have completed (or be completing) three years of successful teaching in an early childhood, elementary, middle, or secondary school. You may begin the certification process before completing three years of experience, but you cannot receive certification until the requirement is met. CTE certificate candidates may be exempt from the bachelor's degree requirement in some states.
How long is National Board Certification valid?+
National Board Certification is valid for 10 years. Before the 10-year certification expires, teachers complete a Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process to demonstrate continued accomplished practice. MOC costs $495 plus a $75 registration fee. Teachers who do not complete MOC before expiration must complete the full four-component certification process again. Once certification has been used for any state-level credential or benefit, the 10-year limit does not apply retroactively to that decision.
How many certificate areas does NBPTS offer?+
NBPTS offers 25 certificate areas spanning 16 disciplines and six student developmental levels: Early Childhood (ages 3โ€“8), Middle Childhood (ages 7โ€“12), Early and Middle Childhood (ages 3โ€“12), Early Adolescence (ages 11โ€“15), Adolescence and Young Adulthood (ages 14โ€“18+), and Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood (ages 11โ€“18+). California's NBPTS Certification Incentive Program, for example, provides a $25,000 award ($5,000/year for 5 years) for NBCTs who teach in high-priority schools. See NBPTS State Incentives Chart at nbpts.org.
What is ATLAS and how does it help candidates?+
ATLAS (Accomplished Teaching, Learning, and Schools) is NBPTS's free online library of resources at nbpts.org/support/atlas. It provides access to over 100 examples of accomplished teaching practice submitted by former National Board candidates and NBCTs across certificate areas. Candidates use ATLAS to see real examples of Component 2, 3, and 4 submissions โ€” including video recordings of accomplished teaching and annotated portfolio entries โ€” to calibrate their understanding of the standards before creating their own submissions.
