The Four NBPTS Certification Components
Every National Board certificate โ in all 25 areas โ requires candidates to complete four components. The specific instructions and standards vary by certificate area. All four components must be completed and passed to earn certification.
What Is NBPTS National Board Certification?
National Board Certification is the highest credential a PreK-12 teacher can earn in the United States โ described by NBPTS as "the most respected professional certification available in education." It is awarded by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), an independent nonprofit organization founded in 1987 by a task force of the Carnegie Forum on Education and the Economy. Component 1 is administered through Pearson VUE at testing centers nationwide.
Certification is available in 25 certificate areas spanning 16 disciplines and six student developmental levels. The certification is grounded in the Five Core Propositionsโ NBPTS's foundational statement of what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. The assessment collects standards-based evidence across four components: one computer-based content knowledge assessment and three classroom-embedded portfolio entries.
National Board Certification is voluntary and complements (not replaces) a state teaching license. It is valid for 10 years and recognized in all 50 states. Many states, districts, and organizations provide financial benefits โ salary increases, stipends, and subsidies โ for NBCTs. More than 130,000 teachers across the U.S. have earned National Board Certification since the program's inception. Apply at nbpts.org.
The Five Core Propositions
