Proactive vs. Reactive Management
Effective classroom management is primarily proactive — it prevents problems before they occur through clear expectations, routines, engaging instruction, and positive relationships. Reactive management (consequences, redirections) is necessary but should be the smaller part of the system.
Establishing Expectations
Set 3–5 positively stated rules collaboratively with students. Teach, model, and practice routines explicitly in the first weeks. Revisit expectations after breaks.
Key Strategies
Withitness — the teacher's awareness of everything happening in the classroom simultaneously (Kounin).
Positive reinforcement — acknowledge desired behavior more often than correcting misbehavior (target 4:1 ratio).
Proximity — moving near off-task students without interrupting instruction.
Logical consequences — consequences that are related, respectful, and reasonable.
Restorative practices — repairing harm through dialogue rather than punishment.
Culturally Responsive Management
Recognize that behavior norms vary across cultures. Avoid over-policing students of color. Build relationships first. Use culturally sustaining practices that honor students' identities.
